I Thirst

Am I a good person? she asked her teacher.

Who is good but God alone? he answered.

And alone, God is good, he said.

He does does not need you,

does not hunger, does not thirst.

He the Eternal is the Eternal He,

timeless

colorless

genderless

apolitical

unspecific.

He is the god who did not

let go of equality with God

to become

not just human, but

a human slave, a slave

among

the slaves, the women, the prisoners.

He is the god who did not

at his execution, as his lungs

labored their last before collapse,

wheeze out the faint, ungodly cry:

I thirst.
