A MEMOIR
I was far away in Oxford, England, when Dad moved out of our red brick house in the suburbs of North Jersey and went to live in an apartment across town. My parents had assembled the four kids some months before to announce their intention to divorce, on a breezy Saturday in March. The divorce was expected–the attendant news of Dad's rejection of his messianic Jewish faith was not.
Memories of my childhood home came flooding in as I began the semester at Oxford. The Christmas gatherings filled with food and filial tension. My 'fishing trips' at the mall with Dad passing out evangelical Christian tracts. The messianic Jewish Passover meals with the mysterious missing guest named Elijah. What did my family's hodgepodge of Protestant and Jewish observances and traditions mean now?
I buried myself in the Bodleian library and looked to the place where my religious heritage had started. My readings took me back to Abraham, the spiritual ancestor of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I discovered Abraham the 'father of monotheism' when he was still worshiping the gods of his ancestors.
The story of Abraham begins in the ancient Sumerian city of Haran. Abraham's wife, Sarah, has struggled with infertility for many years despite entreaties to the gods of Ur and Haran. Then, one day, Abraham receives the promise of an heir from a god who speaks to him on the outskirts of Haran. Who is this god? What cities house his temples and cult images? Should Abraham take his family back to Ur or listen to the voice of this unknown god?
